Ok, I have some catching up to do. sorry for the gap, but it's been like 18 hours since I've had decent cell service. Um...West Virginia, the 21st century left this message with your local western union telegraph office. Dot dot dot....get cell phone towers!!!...dot dot dot...stop.
Ohio...you guys aren't that much better...I had service at most 50% of the time while driving through.
Anyway, Monday morning we made the push for Backbone mountain (the Maryland state highpoint). On the way out there we got a little distracted though and rented some jetskiis to tool around Deep Water Creek Lake (see photos).
Backbone Mountain was a bit more of a hike than we anticipated...I probably shouldn't have worn sanders. The view was pretty great though. Once we got back to the car, we made the trek to Spruce Knob, the West Virginia high point. Wow, there is literally nothing in that state. The actual distance between the two mountains can't be more than 60 miles, but the access road must have wrapped around the mountain 15 times. We were driving for like 3 hours an didn't get to the summit until 10pm or so (See pictures).
We got off the mountain around midnight (after a long series of controlled slides down a winding dirt road).
Next stop was Charleston, WV to find a place to sleep for the night. (Note: the power outages in WV made it almost impossible to find a hotel with an available room)
