Today was a fun filled site seeing day. We went to Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse before heading over to climb Harney Peak.
Mt. Rushmore was spectacular as expected. I was a bit put off at how touristy it is, but I guess that is to be expected. I guess everyone just has to buy their shot glasses, decorative spoons, I love Mt. Rushmore t-shirts and commemorative plates. The crazy horse gift shop at least had a little more "character" then the Rushmore trinket bazaar that they were trying to pass as a gift shop. I think the whole crazy horse thing is spectacular, but I am a bit skeptical that it will ever be finished. It seems like the sculptor's family has taken over the cause, but I'm curious what will happen down the road? Will the grand kids want to follow grandpa's plan to the letter, or will they each try to add a touch of their own flavor? How long will it be before there is infighting and lawsuits and fundraising issues, etc, etc, etc. It just seems like it is going to get more and more difficult to juggle all these competing issues. Perhaps I'm a bit of a "Debbie downer" on this one...I'm just not sure they are going to put this one in the end zone. More power to them if they do though.
Here's a fun little video Brian shot...the roads out here are fantastic!
