We woke up this morning and got a quick breakfast at the local inn before heading over to Charles Mound to summit the IL high point. On the way we passed through the town of Galena and the birthplace of Ulysses S. Grant.
The state highpoint is on private property and it is only open 4 days a year for those who want to "climb" it so we really timed our trip perfectly.
It is basically a 2.2 mile hike up a dirt road and back. We met several other lovely high pointers up on the mound and I spread the word of the blog site...perhaps they are even reading this now.
Charles Mound was my 10th state high point so far.
We got back to the car around 11:00am and hit the road. The day was really just getting started though.
P.S. The picture of that tree in the middle of the field reminds me of the scene from Shawshank Redemption in Buxton where he mentions "the volcanic rock that has no earthly business of being there".

You're right- we did go home and read your blog! I look forward to living vicariously through your adventures (although perhaps not the parts where you nearly plummet to your death in the middle of a blizzard again!)
