Somewhere in Time

After spending the last several weeks on a non-stop adventure it starts to become difficult to top some of the things I've already done.

Just when I thought it couldn't get any better than racing the salt flats, climbing Mt Elbert, and yachting off the coast of Spain, I manage to have a day like today.

After a rather uneventful morning in Sault Ste Marie, I started to make my way to Mackinac Island. I pulled of the exit for St Ignace and stumbled upon the St Ignace Airport.

10 minutes later I am flying over the Great Lakes on my way to Mackinac island. I mean really...who takes a ferry? The pilot radio'ed me a horse-drawn cab and it was waiting for me when I landed to take me to town (They don't allow motorized vehicles on the island).

This island is an enchanted little place that has a tremendous amount of character. I fully intend to come back one day. After walking around town a bit, I began having more cocktails than I could count. I had one on the pier, a couple on the bluffs, one at the golf course, one on the patio of the grand hotel, a couple in the Coppola bar at the Grand Hotel, a few more back at the pier, a road soda in the carriage on the way to the airport...etc...etc...etc.

This all combined to make one of the most relaxing days of the trip.

I really have to thank my pilot, Jake for making this all happen. It ended up costing only a little bit more than the ferry and it was so worth it. The guys at Great Lakes Air run a fantastic operation. I highly recommend using them if you are in the area.

I'm on my way to the airport now for the 2 min flight back to my car.

Next Stop...Chicago.
