Hi everybody! I'm writing to you now from our camp at 11,400 feet on Wheeler Peak in New Mexico. It is extraordinarily cold right now. I am wearing 2 fleeces (one is a fleece vest...shout out to the vest club...you know who you are. Yup, I took the vest to high altitude!).
Anyways, so I last left you guys from my hotel in flagstaff after summiting Humphreys Peak. The next morning we hit up Brandy's Bakery in flagstaff for a delicious breakfast. Brandy's was yet another Diners, Drive-ins and Dives location and I think it was one of the best ones yet. Folks, they combined a breakfast burrito and a Philly cheesesteak! President Obama, can we give these guys a medal or something? I mean these guys should be working at NASA...oh wait...then you would probably cut their funding.
Moving on...
After breakfast we started the drive to Taos, New Mexico to get started on Wheeler Peak. Because I am out of my mind, I decided to climb a 13,100+ foot mountain 1 day after climbing at 12,600+ foot mountain. No worries...I'm getting stronger by the day. I hiked the first 5 miles up Wheeler today at twice the speed I clocked on Humphreys...so it appears that I have acclimatized to the altitude fairly well at this point.
Tomorrow morning is summit day so things are going to only get harder. We are powering up the head lamps and getting an Alpine start before the sun rises. Stay tuned.
P.S. I only have an Edge network signal so I can't upload many photos from today. I will follow up with a more detailed post after we summit this baby and make it back down the mountain.
