From Dusk till Dawn

I woke up early this morning and finished the drive to Mt Arvon (The highpoint for Michigan). I used a combination of google maps and my car's NAV system to get to the summit.

Bad Idea...

Mt Arvon has been heavily forested by International Paper and there are hundreds of old logging roads which created a 20 square mile maze around the mountain. Most of the roads GPS directed me down were overgrown and/or impassable. I ran into down trees, collapsed bridges, flooded roadway and extremely rocky terrain. The main problem was that my NAV systems did not have any of the roads really mapped well. So I would be driving on one and then it would just disappear and I'd just be in the middle of the Forrest.

Needless to say, after spending almost 3.5 hours lost in a web of access roads, I finally made it out and made a bee line for the Local Tourist Information center. I ran into some very sympathetic people there who gave me step by step directions on how to reach the summit via the opposite side of the mountain where it is easier to navigate and has better road conditions.

Once at the trail head it was a mere 0.25 mile walk to reach the summit and lookout points.

After grabbing a few pictures I started slowly making my way East to Sault Ste Marie. I took the scenic drive along the lake shore and stopped like every 2 minutes to take pictures.

I'm in Sault Ste Marie now. When I pulled into town, I saw the bridge over to Canada and figured I might as well take the Summer of DeFeo international again...even if it was only for a few hours. I got dinner across the border and then came back. I haven't fully figured out what to do next...but I will after some sleep.

Major Milestones...
12,500 miles driven
26,500 total miles traveled
