Iowa, thank you for the following...
1) Reprieve from the endless sprawling ghetto that is Kansas City.
2) Free WiFi. You guys are cool cats...you like your WiFi free and plentiful. I dig it. I'm not sure if it's because you are staunch supporters of open access or if you just can't figure out how to encrypt it, but either way I'll take it.
3) Rest Stops. It is almost uncanny how perfectly they are spaced apart. It's like they measured the size of my bladder. They are clean and pleasant, but, most importantly, they have sections of the parking lot where they turn the lights off at night so you can go to sleep. It's like they can read my mind.
4) The Machine Shed in Des Moines. That place was fantastic. I had the nicest waitress and an amazing lunch. They did things that other restaurants just don't do, but should. Like...include a cup of soup AND a side with your BBQ beef brisket sandwich. Like...deliver a pitcher of Iced Tea to your table so you don't have to wait for your refills. Like...provide Free WiFi. Like...charge you less than $10 for lunch. It's the small things.
A special thanks to my friend Nate for directing me to yet another fantastic slice of Iowa while I was passing through.
Kansas...You can learn a few things from Iowa. You too, Nebraska...I'm not letting you off that easy.
P.S. Every state can learn a thing from New Mexico. They publish the costs of their public works projects on signs on the highway. I absolutely loved the transparency. They literally had a sign at the start of every section of road construction that listed the name of the contracted party doing the work and the cost ("This project cost $1,364,500 and was contracted by Western Mesa Construction LLC").
